Habibullah Sorosh, born in 1985 in the Jaghori district of Ghazni, Afghanistan, is a distinguished
professor, screenwriter, and playwright recognized for his research in Afghan cinema, absurdist
drama, and historical films. He holds a Bachelor of Cinema and Theater from Kabul University
and a Master of Art Criticism from the Kazakh National Academy of Arts Temorbek Zhurgenov.
After teaching for a decade at Kabul University, Faculty of Fine Arts and Journalism, he is now a
visiting professor and researcher at Carnegie Mellon University in the USA. Habibullah’s
significant contributions to the arts include 30 plays and scripts, 2 textbooks, and 10 scientific
papers published in international journals, earning him both national and international
accolades. Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, which posed a threat to his
life due to his vocal criticism, he fled to the United States with his family, supported by Scholars
at Risk, where he continues to promote, teach, and study theater and cinema at Carnegie
Mellon University.
